About the Online Toxicology Symposium 2023

What Is it – March is Poison Prevention Awareness Month and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) and VetEducation, have teamed up to bring to you three live and interactive webinars. In these live sessions, renowned speakers from the APCC will explore how you can identify, prevent, and treat various toxins.

Day 1

Mar 21, 2023

Summary: In this program, participants will learn about Common Toxins in both dogs and cats that are treated by the APCC and in clinical practice! Participants will learn the mechanism of action and toxicokinetics of each agent. Toxic thresholds will also be discussed and the symptoms expected to occur at and above those thresholds. Finally participates will learn the decontamination and treatment recommendations for each toxin.
 

Day 2

Mar 22, 2023

Summary: In this lecture, participants will learn about 5 toxins that are less common, but can commonly cause death. The discussion will include key clinical features, common areas of concern, treatment recommendations, and receive special instruction on how treatment plans can be formulated to ensure the best chance of a positive outcome. We will discuss current advances and medications that can be used in the treatment of these toxins.
 

Day 3

Mar 23, 2023

Summary: In this lecture, Dr. Smith as she discusses the six uncommon but serious toxins. Participants will learn key clinical features and specific areas of concerns. There will also be focus on treatment plans, including current advances and new treatments that may ensure a positive outcome. Toxins discussed will include heptane, ionophores, selenium, tetrodotoxin, PAPP and 1080.

Lindsey N Stall, DVM, MS

Dr. Lindsay Stall graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2013. She completed a rotating internship at the University of Illinois and followed that up with 3 specialty internships in ophthalmology. She has also spent several years as an emergency veterinarian and has dabbled in primary care medicine. Areas of passion are toxicology, ophthalmology, emergency medicine, dentistry and of course Toxicology! She loves teaching and education. Dr. Stall lives on the gulf coast of Florida with her dog Rollo, her 3 cats (Mel, Rio and Ziggy Stardust) and her husband and in her free time, she loves to read, craft and ride roller coasters!

Dr. Laura Stern, DVM, DABVT

Dr. Laura Stern, DVM, DABVT is the Director, APCC Training for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. She graduated from Michigan State University in 2005. After working in private veterinary practice for 4 years, she discovered her love of all things toxic and has been at the ASPCA APCC for the past 13 years. She has spoken throughout the US and authored multiple book chapters and articles on veterinary toxicology.

Karla Smith, DVM

Dr. Karla Smith is a Consulting Veterinarian in Clinical Toxicology. She is originally from Arizona. She graduated from Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. After veterinary school Dr. Smith worked in small animal practice (general medicine and emergency) until 2004, when she moved to Illinois to work at the Animal Poison Control Center. She is involved with Greyhound rescue and has been breeding Borzoi since 2011. She is active in many dog sports, including lure coursing, obedience and the new sport of canine nose work.
